Summer Design Ideas: Can interior design beat the heat?

Wow it’s getting hot in here! But the good news is yes interior design CAN beat the heat! Here are a few secret design tricks that you can use around your house to help make your home look and feel cooler this Summer. Little things like doing away with fuzzy sheepskin throws in the kids room and adding blue-based colours can make your home feel fresher—without having to crank the air conditioning. Here are a few interior design tricks that can make your home look and feel cooler this summer.

#1 Change up your fabrics

Store soft and fuzzy things that keep you warm in the winter. Instead use light, natural linen fabrics which add comfort and a breezy feel to summer home decorating.

#2 Lighten up

When it comes to colour, inside, play up home accents in cool colours, such as blue and blue-based greens and purples. These hues are thought to make a space feel cooler, and looking at them is believed to have a calming effect.

Outside, use whites and pale pastels for the roof, exterior walls, and outdoor home furnishings reflect more heat and keep buildings and gardens cool in summer.

#3 Flex your green thumb and add plants

Add houseplants to every room in your house. Tall plants create shade, soil humidifies the air and keep rooms comfortable in summer months.

#4 Declutter

Declutter areas around windows and doors to have easy access to open and close them for lowering the temperature inside your home and create more spacious rooms with good air flow.

#5 Cross Ventilation

Cross ventilation is a natural method of cooling and something my husband is onto me about constantly. Basically open every window in your house to force cool exterior air into the building through an inlet (like an open window) while outlet forces warm interior air outside (through a roof vent or higher window opening). It essentially brings the cool air in and pushes the old stifling air out.
